Welcome to Ferndale Washington

Ferndale, located just north of Bellingham on the west side of the Nooksack River, was named in 1872 when the region's first schoolteacher noticed a clump of ferns surrounding the schoolhouse. High bluffs over the river provide scenic views of the rich farmland of the Nooksack Valley, Mt. Baker and the Cascade Range. Originally settled as a trade center for surrounding farms, Ferndale has expanded its economy to include oil refineries and an enormous aluminum reduction plant which employs over a thousand people.
